Algarve Tourism Plans

Over the years, many illegal (and dubiously built) dwellings have sprung up on the islands in the Algarve's Ria Formosa Nature Reserve.
After much arguing and infighting, it's been decided that many of them will have to be demolished. As part of the Polis (the overall plan for the Reserve), families will be rehoused as their homes come under the bulldozer. One only hopes that the new homes will be in sensible locations for men who make a subsistence living from fishing.
And much of the reasoning behind this plan is to boost Algarve tourism. Personally, I'd rather see the rambling outlines of the present homes than a committee's idea of what a tourist attraction should be.

Algarve on two wheels?

If that title is the question, then the answer must surely be: why not?

Let's face it, with a terrific climate and beautiful countryside, the Algarve is a great place to discover using just pedal power.

And, since the weather stays benign just about the whole year round, an off-season break when it's awful outside wherever you live could be 'just the ticket'.

I've done the research, written the page, and posted it on the 'Net...

... which means all you need to do is visit Algarve Cycling and plan your next vacation. There's even a tricycle option where you can explore Portimao and its locale.

And the next question must be: what are you waiting for?

Coastline Conundrum?

The news recently included information about the proposed new marina at Ferragudo.

Although it's really just a small fishing village, it's obviously smarting from the success of its rival-across-the-water, Portimao / Praia da Rocha.

The plans as published are extensive and will inevitably alter the nature of the place - probably irrevocably.

I suppose that it's part of Algarve's strategy to attract a wealthier sort of tourist: certainly, the sort of folk who own or rent large boats are likelier to have more money than the rest of us...

The trick is to keep them returning, of course. And one thing I've noticed about ships (or boats or whatever they're called) is that you can take them anywhere that has water.

I suppose the credit crunch is going to result in less visitors to Ferragudo in the next few years, but will the sailors it hopes to attract (if and when the marina is complete) repay the vast amount of money it'll cost?

Tourist Blues

I keep reading different accounts of what's going on in the tourism world, now that the Credit Crunch is a reality on both sides of the Atlantic.
One camp has it that Algarve Tourism is likely to suffer badly because of the Pound Sterling's slide against the Euro (15% in the last year!)
The other body of opinion is that the fuel surcharges will slam transatlantic flights, affecting Brazil, Venezuela, California and Florida among other popular destinations.
Rather like when the next General Election is going to be held, or whether the banks will increase interest rates or reduce them, there seem to be as many shades of opinion as there are grains of sand on Algarve beaches.
One thing's for sure, there must be some real bargains to be had out there, if those villas, apartments and hotels aren't getting their quota of tourists. Could be just the time to bag a great value Algarve vacation!

Full-speed, backwards?

I should start by pointing out that I'm all in favour of ending discriminatory practices in the workplace but, it seems, the politicos, as usual, have managed to take things to extremes. Even to the extent where it works to the disadvantage of females - though I bet they won't admit it.
When they enact the latest bit of Euro-legislation around about now, it will "prohibit the direct or indirect sexual discrimination with regard to the provision of goods and services". So, what's wrong with that, you might ask...
... Well, for starters it will mean that women will no longer receive cheaper quotations for vehicle insurance on the grounds that they're safer (and better) drivers than men. Someone please explain to me how that's helpful?
I'm sure the members of European Commission (yet again the genius(es) behind this latest master-stroke) actually mean well. It's just that they don't seem able to think things through to a logical conclusion. Otherwise they'd have excluded such obvious reverse-discrimination from the legislation.
What we patently need is more females in the European Commission (to increase the chance of common sense prevailing) but this legislation will probably prevent anyone trying to bring that about as it would be sexual discrimination.
To paraphrase that ad for the movie 'Alien': In Euro-land, no-one can hear you scream.
(Which is just as well, really).

O Futuro de Albufeira

I read where the popularly-elected mayor of Albufeira states that he thinks he's spotted a better class of tourist this year...

Presumably, more of them are wearing top hats and Eton collars? I think his comment refers to the type of tourist that spends more, stays at 5-star hotels and eats at more expensive restaurants.

Just the sort of scruffy, low-rent tourist
that Albufeira won't miss...?

Whether that's the life-blood of Albufeira in the future I don't know. I can see how fewer people using the local services while spending more per head would suit the local authority, but I can't imagine the owners of bed-and-breakfast establishments, pensões, and private apartments would necessarily agree!

Just to show that his heart's in the right place really, Sr. Silva (the aforementioned mayor) points out that in the ongoing struggle between local authorities and national government, he doesn't always see eye-to-eye with Prime Minister Socrates.

In particular, he thinks that central government will eventually impose road tolls on major highways like the A22 (Via do Infante east-west motorway). This in spite of the governing party's opposition to such tolls before it came to power. (Ah, that refrain repeated throughout the entire democratic world...)

Asked whether loss of votes within the region might worry the Government, Sr. Silva is quoted as opining that there aren't enough votes in the region to bother the men in power. This is because larger cities like Sintra contain more votes than does the whole of Algarve.

Despite which, the mayor seemed fairly upbeat about the future of Albufeira, where new hospitals and shopping complexes can be expected in the next few years. He was also proud of the Albufeira area's 15 Blue Flag beaches, and its ability to cope with visitor influxes that peak at 800% of the city's normal populace.

You bet, Sr. Silva - vive Albufeira!

Too $?*% Busy!

It's amazing how, now that we live in Algarve, we're struggling to do as much as we managed when we were here on vacation!
I mentioned, on the Algarve events (What's On) page, that there was a spectacular meeting scheduled between four schools of Spanish dance. Great, I thought, that'll be a wonderful evening out...
... Not! Things crop up when you live in a place - and they seem to crop up just when you don't want them. Well, the Spanish dance event came and went with me stuck doing something else (less enjoyable, naturally)!
So, I've resolved to be more selfish. In future, if I decide that I want to check out an event, then it's going to take Armageddon (or something fairly important, anyway) to keep me away.
I didn't move here just to miss out on interesting stuff taking place only a few kilometres away. And if life gets in the way, it's just going to have to step aside for an evening or two!

Hot To Trot...

I'm off to UK for a family wedding and to catch up with friends all over the England and Scotland (and Norway!) that I haven't seen in ages.
While I'm away, husband Nev's tasked with looking after my fruit trees and favourite plants. It's not so much he doesn't have green fingers, more that his attention span is short (and his memory's terrible).
So, I'm hoping that when I get back to Algarve, it's not plant-carnage in the garden!
Meantime, I'm overdue to issue a newsletter for Algarve Beach Life. Couldn't get it done while I was preparing to travel, and now I'm left with trying to write something and email it to Nev so he can get it issued.
At least it'll give me the chance to remind him of his plant protection duties.
I do love going places, but the travelling often makes me ill. This time was no different. As well as the plane not leaving until 11 at night, it was an awfully turbulent flight, so I arrived wrecked.
Once I've recovered my composure, it's down to visiting as many people as my schedule will permit.
So many victims, so little time...

Algarve Apartment Rental

I get quite a number of enquiries, via the form on my website, about the best value holidays, best areas, best things to do during an Algarve vacation, and so on.
Since some of my very earliest (and fondest) Algarve memories are from times when Nev and I had chosen an Algarve apartment rental, I often advise enquirers to try it for themselves.
In particular, if you're a reasonably-sized group or family holidaying together, it can be much cheaper to have a comfortable, private apartment than to opt for hotels, aparthotels, or even bed-and-breakfast.
That got me thinking that a choice selection of top-rate apartments would be just the thing to include on Algarve Beach Life - and you can see the first offering so far on my new page:

Portimao News

Plans are afoot (in fact the work has started) to repair the metal bridge that crosses the Arade river in Portimao.

The authorities have issued assurances that the bridge is not actually in danger of collapse, which is good news for the banana boats that sail beneath it to visit Silves. Apparently, the bridge is long overdue some maintenance, on account of its advanced age (131 years, it transpires).
Fortunately, there are other means of crossing the river, as you can read in my page about Portimao. But do check that you know how to get about the town if you’re visiting any time before November, which is when the works are due to finish.
Meantime, there's the new retail park just outside Portimao, where you can shop 'til you drop (I spent 7 hours there, last week!) when you're taking a break from those Algarve beaches...

Nao Fumar?

A recent online poll conducted by an Algarve weekly came up with 77% of respondents voting for a complete ban on smoking in all public places.

At first, I was surprised, until the penny dropped - it’s an English-language paper! I somehow think the result would have been different if the question had been asked in a Portuguese-language periodical. More chance of getting a result in France, I’d have thought.

Meantime, we gamely search for Algarve restaurants and bars where massive doses of passive smoke aren’t obligatory…

What's In A Name?

The government in this wonderful region of Portugal has decided to launch a PR initiative to introduce more potential visitors to the delights of Algarve.
How? By changing its name for the upcoming campaign… to Allgarve!
That's like British Airways asking people to fly Brutish Airways, and hoping that they get the point (whatever the point might be!)
Big corporations spend molto dineiro on brand-placement, with highly-paid teams of experts involved. Algarve, it seems, gets a bunch of bureaucrats to dream up a pointless variation on the famous name, then protests that it’s a great idea.
From what I’ve read recently, most local politicians and those professionals involved with Algarve tourism think it’s a crackpot scheme, offensive to the people of Algarve and incomprehensible to those at whom it’s aimed.
I can only suggest that the regional government officers who dreamed this up should stay out of the sun more, or at least wear wide-brimmed hats to protect their grey cells…

What's On In Algarve...

I thought I'd check out what's on in Algarve, as I'm gearing up to move over there, and I'm going to need some cultural fall-backs to take my mind off all the stuff there'll be to do! There's lots of painting exhibitions, as usual...

If you're in or around Portimao, you can see a paintings exhibition, "Impresses", at EMARP, Rua José António Marques, weekdays from 0800 to 1700. There's lots of other stuff to do in Portimao, as you can discover at my dedicated Portimao page.

Elsewhere, I notice that British artist David Haines crops up at a number of venues, so you should have a good chance of seeing his stuff wherever you are staying! Here are your choices:

Okay, so this stuff can be addictive...

... I even started another blog at algarvebeaches.mindsay.com. That one will probably be more about how our Algarve property purchase is going (and it still is, touch wood!) rather than Algarve matters in general - but who knows...

Females can be fickle (allegedly).

Whatever, with the onsite blog at algarve-beach-life.com, that's 3 blogs and counting.

I may resort to methadone, if I need to cut back on my blog habit. We'll see.

Once again, the Algarve has topped the poll for golfing destinations. (It also happened in 2000).

It's best for customer satisfaction, value for money, accommodation - and, of course, its wonderful courses.

And this poll was based on client feedback from a wide selection of tour operators in some 30+ countries!

Let's hear it for Algarve Golf! (I always knew it was true, but it's nice to have it confirmed).

I was surprised to find that, having blogged just once about plans to extend facilities for naturists in Algarve, my site is regularly found by engines looking for Algarve naturism…

Not sure whether I'll ever be brave enough to try it myself, but websites should be about information, so I started checking things out when we were vacationing in Algarve a couple of months ago.

While there may be plans afoot, nothing much seems to have happened to start improving facilities just yet…

But things change slowly in Algarve. Meantime, should you wish to learn more about what's available, check out my new Algarve Naturism page.

Algarve Formula 1?

Will they, won't they...?

The on-off deliberations about a proposed circuit for Formula 1 race cars in Algarve rumble on, apparently.

They are ready to build the 'International Autodrome of Algarve' at Pereira, near Portimao. The only thing missing is the necessary permission from the authorities.

It's a big-budget project - 100 million Euros has been mentioned - but it has its opponents as well as its backers. The area under consideration has been subject to the attention of arsonists in the last few years and most of the local pine trees have disappeared.

Apparently, there's a ban on speculative building in the area, but opponents of the project fear that the law will be breached while the authorities look steadfastly away, in the hope that the money involved will benefit the economy. I suppose I'd have to opine that Formula 1 is hardly representative of Algarve culture!

In my own mind, there is a struggle about this matter. That's because I enjoy watching F1 when it's televised. On the other hand, I know what a terrible waste of energy it represents, with unnecessary pollution, both chemical and sonic.

It will be interesting to see how it pans out. If it happens without proper authorisation, I suppose it will underline the fears of many in the UK - that European ecological laws (among others) will be widely breached by other member states, while observed to the letter in the UK. Hardly a level playing field, if that's how it works.

So, will the winner be ecology or economy?

Algarve Property - Our First, Faltering Steps

Well...

After talking about it and blogging about it - and, needless to say, dreaming about it, we seem to be on the way to owning our first Algarve property.

Butterflies? I should say so.

Things are all the more stressful, since they need to be accomplished from a distance (with some sea in between me and what's going on!). Of course, that's why you need a lawyer on the spot who knows how to arrange things in your absence...

But that doesn't always help me sleep!

I'm sure everything will be fine in the end, but in the meantime I'm logging things as they happen, just so I can check back and see how they developed.

More Sand at Pera...

Fiesa 2005 was just as good as last year's bash.

This time we went on the last day during daylight hours, had a good look around and then left.

But we went back at about 2130 (you can come and go as you like on a day ticket) and enjoyed the spectacle of all the sand sculptures illuminated in the dark.

There was a decent local rock band playing, so we lazed on a boarded area that was spread with cushion, Middle-Eastern-style and just 'chilled' (as those young folk say).

When it all ended, we drove back to our Portimao apartment, tired but happy.

Unlike last year, they didn't invite visitors to help break up the sculptures on the last night, but honestly - I think we were too pooped anyway!

I'm looking forward already to Fiesa 2006!

The Trials of Tourism

I've started packing for our September Algarve vacation...

Unlike husband Nev, I don't mind it. To me, it's just part of the preparations, and I can savour the experience before I even set off. Whereas he just gets frazzled if he's asked which pair of beach sandals should be taken. (And of course, if they're not there when he needs them, he'd sulk).

Just the car hire still to book, then I can relax.

But I did avail myself last night of the numerous hints and tips I put up on my updated Algarve Tourism page....

... Just to make sure I'd considered everything. I did skip a beat when I got to the bit about travel insurance, but a quick check of our annual policy showed me that it's still current.

Phew!

And I'm printing out addresses for some of the agents whose properties we intend to view while we're there. If we can find something great this time, I won't need to go back November or December for another look. (Like that would be a trial!)

Enough blogging... Back to the packing. Excited? Me? Of course not.... (big fib).

Much Hype about the 'Hipers'...

There's a takeover brewing in Algarve.

Rumours abound that a Spanish consortium wants to buy an Algarve market chain. But nobody's admitting anything.

The biggest bunch in Algarve is the SuperAli chain. They have shops, both large and small, dotted all over Algarve. It's unlikely that they are the target, which is good news for shoppers, since a 'hipermercado' firm would probably want to close down all the little outlets as being 'beneath them'. That would not be good for consumers, from either a convenience or choice point of view.

Anyway, I like those plucky little SuperAlis. It would be a shame if anyone messed around with them.

So, who's up for grabs? Speculation has it that the likeliest candidate is the Marrachinho chain.

I can't remember having shopped in any of their outlets, so can't comment on their value or convenience.

But, I'm intrigued by this Spanish interest in Algarve businesses...

Only last January, a Spanish group bought Vilamoura marina. Is it because Spanish tourism is on the wane, I wonder?

If so, that could mean a big boost for Algarve real estate. Maybe I should get a move on and buy something soon!

So Much to See!

I'm really excited, now that the searching's done and I'm starting to pack for my September Algarve vacation...

There seems to be so much to see and do in September. It's like they're cramming it all in before the season ends!

One place I'll definitely be revisiting is the Cultural Centre at São Lourenço in Almancil. It's one of my 'Algarve favourites' and this September they're showing an exhibition of art by Juan Martinez.

Meanwhile, over in Boliqueime, where we stayed in April, there's an exhibition of painting and sculpture at Espaços, Estrada da Estação.

What with that and the dance event in Faro AND looking around at Algarve property, how am I supposed to find time to hit my favourite beaches?

On the bright side, it's the sort of problem that I welcome...

The Unforgiving Sea

I read with sadness of the death by drowning of a British futures-trading millionaire. It happened at Castelejo beach in the Vila do Bispo area, which is popular with surfers and is subject to large waves and strong currents.

The victim, in his 40s, had reportedly rescued his teenage son who had been swept out from the shallows, but could not make it back himself.

It's sad news of course, but its ramifications were amplified for one resort establishment, the Vila Lara Hotel, near Lagoa, when British newspapers wrongly reported that the tragedy had occurred off the beachfront there.

The hotel management are understandably upset to have been wrongly associated with such a sad event, although it was true that the victim had been staying at Vila Lara. What a shame that the UK Press didn’t bother to check their facts before rushing to print.

Of course, seawater and danger go hand in hand, but Algarve beaches are generally pretty safe. It would take more than some scare stories in the British newspapers to put me off my next Algarve vacation!

A Heartwarming Story of Carvoeiro

I came across this one when I was surfing to find a September Algarve vacation...

It seems that a British couple visiting Algarve for the first time in 2002 had chosen Carvoeiro. While dining at their (already) favourite restaurant, they noticed a couple of stray dogs that didn't look as 'street-hardened' as most of the poor mutts that abound in Algarve. One even had a collar, but staff confirmed that it was a stray and had been hanging around for some time.

It was only when she witnessed one dog suffering some needless but inevitable cruelty from a passerby that the lady decided enough was enough...

(And let's give them a well-deserved plug, since the staff were so caring: they were Maxime's restaurant and the Carvoeiro Bar)

She arranged for the two dogs to be taken into care and cured of their various ailments by a local pet sanctuary. This took over a year (and repeated financial contributions) before the animals were able to be certified for their 'passports'.

Then, they were crated up and flown over (what an adventure for an innocent animal) to the UK.

And now, they enjoy their new life, in a loving family. What a great ending.

Three cheers for Jack and Daniella, as they were named (the chap who first noticed them was drinking Jack Daniels).

But I can't help wondering whether they miss that gorgeous Algarve weather.

Possibly not... As I know myself, a full tum comes first in most situations!

What to do on your Algarve holiday...

My first choice is always to check what's on in the way of culture - then 'arrange' to be in the vicinity of the venue, so that I can casually suggest to husband Nev that we check out whatever is going on at the end of a busy day's Algarve exploration.

I think he's guessed how it happens, but since he's pretty mellow during an Algarve vacation, he seems not to mind.

I'd already planned to visit Faro this September (apart from using the airport, that is).

So when I heard that a contemporary dance 'platform' would be held there, I factored that into my plans.

The event in question is Plataforma de Dança Contemporânea Portuguesa, a production featuring many of Portugal's top contemporary choreographers. It's at Faro's Municipal Theatre on September 17th and tickets are only 5 Euros! Wow... great value!

And if you can't make that show, it's repeated at Teatro Lethes (a stunningly decorated, if tiny theatre - pictured above - in Faro's Rua de Portugal) and the Municipal Theatre in Lagoa on the two following evenings. So that's 3 chances to soak up some modern Portuguese culture.

Include me in, as they say in the movies!

Algarve Vacation Va-va-voom!

I've done it!

Arranged our next Algarve vacation for the second half of September.

Downside: Couldn't find an affordable villa.

Upside: Booked a nice aparthotel in Portimao which does self-catering. (An unfortunate necessity, if you're a couple of tree-hugging veggies!)

That'll be good, as we haven't spent time around Portimao for quite a while. We can renew our acquaintanceship...

But, we'll also be taking time out to look at some of that fabulous Algarve real estate that we'd like to buy!

So that'll be: breakfast, beach, lunch, rest, explore, view properties (in that order). A couple of hours every other day won't make too much of a hole in our relaxation schedule.

We'll be meeting up at Gatwick, since Nev will travel down from where he's working at the moment. That'll be a bit strange, as we normally share the preparations for a holiday...

(You know the story, girls - he throws some stuff into a suitcase, then I look through it, ditch the stuff he doesn't need and substitute all the vital kit he'd omitted).

So, I'm thrilled skinny at the moment. The only thing left to arrange is our Algarve car hire.

Don't know whether to have transport for the full 2 weeks or whether we should just hire bicycles for part of the time. (In an effort to work off some of those excess holiday calories!)

No worries, though. That's the sort of problem I don't mind wrestling with!

I'm off to work now, but instead of using a car, I'm on cloud 9!

Parking Problems

Faro, the Algarve's capital, is in the process of overhauling its parks in an effort to offer more facilities to visitors and residents.

One park, Jardim da Alameda João de Deus has just reopened (an inevitable few months late!) after its latest facelift. Since the park's been around since the mid-1800s, it was doubtless overdue!

The redesigned facility is intended to cater for all ages. Unfortunately, this extends to having caged animals on display, an Iberian quirk that upset me greatly when we visited the Spanish Algarve in April 2005 and saw the disgraceful 'zoo' in Ayamonte's park.

On the plus side, there are new plantings and waterfalls, more shaded benches for 'watching the world go by', and even a 'geriatric' area. Senior citizens are encouraged to stay limber by trying out the exercise kit provided there! (Well, that should save the cost of gym membership when we buy our Algarve villa).

The delay in reopening remains a mystery but hey, this is the laid-back Algarve, when all's said and done.

Planning the Campaign...

Since we decided that we're definitely off to live in Algarve, I've been mulling over the preliminary steps.

First thing is to find out about some reasonably-priced accommodation that I can rent while I'm searching for our dream property...

It's a different deal from the short-term vacation rentals that I describe in my Algarve accommodation page.

The sort of price I'd be happy to pay for 1 or 2 weeks of a glorious peak season vacation just won't do when I'm looking at 1 or 2 months for a stay.

Research, research, as they say.

Now, all I need to do is find out where I need to look!

Wow!

What a weekend...

Nev and I sat down and really talked, for the first time in ages, about living in Algarve - and it looks like we're going to do it!

We decided that there will always be a hundred reasons why we should put it off, and if we listen to our cautious inner voices, we'll simply never do it.

So I'm knuckling down to some serious research from now on.

First, I'm going to re-read all the necessary steps on my page about buying Algarve property.

Then, I'm going to find out about renting somewhere over in Algarve for at least a month toward the end of this year / the beginning of 2006.

And I'm going to search and search until I find our dream Algarve property.

I'm scared witless, but we're finally going to do it!

Replacing the Divots

As I've noted elsewhere, golf is not my forté.

My swing is famous mainly for the number of nearby persons it might endanger. (Can't remember how many irons have slipped from my 'unorthodox' grip).

So, I don't have to turn down a lot of offers to join keen golfing friends for a round.

Something to do with 'guilt by association', I think - they just don't want to be seen around someone so challenged, in case onlookers think they're that hopeless, too.

But, of the few occasions when I have thrashed a tiny white ball around the semi-rough, the most enjoyable by far have been those that took place on an Algarve golf course.

Thus it was that, when one of husband Nev's golf-nut pals mentioned that he was looking for somewhere new to take a golfing vacation, I lost no time in suggesting that he check out my Algarve golf page.

He was a bit bemused, I think...

Firstly that a mere female should have one of those 'website thingies' (the very idea!) and secondly that he'd not thought of Algarve before.

Now, I might not be that clued-up about golf... (the handle's the end with the rubber grip, right?)... but I do know a thing or two about Algarve!

So, by the time I'd finished enthusing about my favourite holiday destination, some of the passion had rubbed off, methinks.

Whatever, he left promising to check out my web page and see whether I wasn't exaggerating.

As if I would!

Tennis Anyone?

After numerous hints (some would say nagging) from husband Nev about an Algarve tennis holiday, I've given in and started looking.

Problem is, we started talking about it over 2 years ago, after my friend Chris had enthused about her first experience of Algarve tennis.

Since then, I've hardly played, so I'll be rusty as an old bedspring - I just know I'll be relegated to the 'useless' section of any coached sessions.

On the bright side, if the weather's lovely (as it should be in September) then perhaps I'll just sit around and watch the others sweat it out in the drills and practice sessions.

And I'll just mingle in at the 'apres racquet' activities and hope no-one notices.

I do feel sorry for Nev, who struggles manfully through the UK climate, year in, year out, in search of a decent day's tennis. So I guess I should at least check to see if I can arrange him some fine-weather hitting while we're on holiday.

Of course, if it's too late and all the places are booked, he can't say I didn't try...

And I'll be able to get on with what I plan to do during our September Algarve vacation. (Cue evil chuckle...)

Downside of a Sunny Climate?

The wildfires in northern Portugal remind me once more that, however much people in the UK complain about the weather (and we do whinge quite a lot!) we rarely have to put up with the extremes that others suffer...

Prolonged dry weather does carry the 'tinder-box' effect, and these raging fires take an inordinate amount of time and effort to quench.

I was glad that the Portuguese government had shown the good sense to ask for international help in dealing with the present conflagrations.

I hope that nothing like this happens in Algarve, as that would be cruel for a region that is only just recovering from its fiery afflictions in 2003!

It was pleasing to see how quickly the landscape recovered, when I visited in April 2004 (see my Algarve Fires update page). But that rather discounts the trauma experienced by those who lose homes, possessions and - worst of all - loved ones, when human carelessness starts one of these fearsome events.

I'm praying that nothing happens before or during our upcoming September 2005 Algarve vacation. And that's terribly selfish, as I freely admit. But, of course, I'm also praying that Algarve is spared any such horror even after I've returned home. I love the area and feel it quite keenly when anything awful happens there.

It might be fun to attend, but remember to avert your eyes as you're leaving, else those ghastly, candy-coloured apartment blocks in the marina will ruin the effect of what you've just seen!

Revenge of the Sardines

Historically a popular delicacy in the Algarve, it seems that the sardines have had enough...

Now they're trying to sink boats in a crazed bid for revenge.

This week, a catamaran just off Galé beach, near Albufeira, was the most recent recipient of this piscine payback, when a fire forced those onboard to abandon ship!

It started in the sardine store, apparently, which is what led to the suspicion that the scaled avengers were to blame.

Fortunately, only two people were slightly injured, and the rapid response of other recreational craft in the vicinity (a few hundred metres offshore) presumably frightened off any further finned arsonists...

Witnesses claimed that the crew seemed unprepared for the emergency, but who could have foreseen such an event?

If you're planning an Algarve vacation and are tempted to sample some grilled sardines, don't do it on the water...

They're prepared to fight back!

Faro Frolics...

If you're going to be in Algarve during late September (as I plan to be) then you might like to spend some of a hot afternoon checking out the Sports Fair at Faro (the Algarve's capital).

It's a joint venture affair by the Algarve University and Faro Câmara and, apart from attracting more visitors to the city, it's hoped to promote some of the local sports venues.

The philanthropy doesn't end there, though, as the event is intended to 'educate' folk in how to remain healthier through lifestyle changes. That, to you and me, means performing different forms of exercise...

If you're feeling energetic (or would just like to watch other people losing sweat) then get along to Jardim Manuel Bívar and see what's on offer. The dates are September 23, 24 and 25.

On Your Bike...

In a bid to promote a more ecological outlook on local residents, the authorities in Vila Real do S António, on Algarve's south-eastern extreme, are to ban motor vehicles from the town for part of September (2005).

I'll be interested to see (since we're planning to be in Algarve around then) how it works.

My impression of Portugal has always been that it's even more committedly car-mad than the UK.

The idea of all the petrol-heads unable to get their daily fix of fumes, furore and free-for-all is an amusing one...

Apparently, it's linked to European Mobility Week (starts 16 September), though many who routinely travel by motor car might wonder how ending up with less travel choices squares with that!

Disregarding the unfortunately inappropriate name for the event, I will make sure I'm in Vila Real to see it happen. It'll be lovely to walk about without having to watch out for kamikaze drivers.

(Of course, I'll have to work out how to get there without a car...)

But Nev'll be keen to wolf down another of his favourite artichoke-topped pizzas at O Corocao de Cidade (details on my site's Favourite Restaurants page).

I suppose if the ban is adopted more widely, it might even be safe to consider cycling to Vila Real...

I'll watch for developments before I make the final decision on travel arrangements.

Blue Flag Blues...

It's very important, in this age of fickle tourists, that a vacation
resort should boast a Blue Flag. This announces the availability of an approved, clean stretch of sand for a visitor's recreational use...

Imagine the consternation then, should your resort's Blue Flag status be revoked by the awarding authority.

That could mean repercussions for local businesses - from the grandest hotel to the humblest memento shop. Tourist income is essential for such economies, and the high-earning season is short, even in climates as blessed as that of Portugal's Algarve region.

So, it's little wonder that they're up in arms about losing their Blue flag for Altura beach near Castro Marim, which is in eastern Algarve.

In fact, so incensed are the local Chamber of Commerce (Camara) that they've taken to questioning the competence and impartiality of the Blue Flag auditors! They've even sent back the Blue Flags for two nearby beaches that had them re-awarded.

In the laid-back Algarve, that means things must really be bad!

In dispute are the claimed emissions from the water treatment plant serving Altura and Manta Rota.

It's a 'handbags at 10 paces' stand-off between the Blue Flag Association and the Castro Marim Camara, with the latter claiming that their communications to Blue Flag have gone unanswered.

And it seems that restitution of Altura's Blue Flag won't be enough...
... the Camara members are demanding an apology, too, presumably to display alongside the flag.

It's been a long, hot summer and tempers are fraying, I'd say.

Unfortunately, a period of drought is not the best time to inform tourists that they can't cool off in the sea either.

Let's hope it all works out for the best!

And remember, there are over 100 miles of beautiful Algarve beaches to choose from, if the absence of a blue flag worries you...

Algarve Dreaming...

We're due for some more Algarve property hunting during our next vacation there.

As we'll be going for 2 weeks, I won't mind too much. Not that I normally begrudge the time spent looking around attractive properties...

... but then, normally, it's not keeping me from some quality time on those Algarve beaches.

Husband Nev is now keener than I am, which is a bit of a change from when I first mentioned that I'd like to own an home in Algarve!

Our dilemma is whether to keep a small place in the UK, so we can come back for visits without relying on friends and family for accommodation.

Of course, keeping a UK home would limit our choice of affordable Algarve villas, so it would be a definite compromise...

Watch this space for more dithering and mind-changing.

Now, back to planning that Algarve vacation in September.

Algarve's Water Problems Over?

Not yet, according to a meeting of the regional development commission of Algarve. While it's true that figures show a drop in consumption during June and July 2005 (compared to 2004), it's too soon for consumers to rest on their laurels...

More water saving efforts are required, since this year's drought may prove the shape of things to come. There's even talk of introducing water use regulations and other enforcement measures.

Fortunately, the Algarve coastline provides a limitless source of water that anyone can enjoy, with abundant opportunities for Algarve watersports. Or if you'd rather look on than get wet, just follow my lead and recline on one of those sunny Algarve beaches while watching others getting soaked to the skin!

A Horse's Tale

I finally got around to updating my Algarve horse-riding page. I'd meant to do it since April last year (!) when I went along to a Centro Hipico for an afternoon's equine fun and the first thing that happened was that a horse bit my knuckle (what an absolute rotter!)

It was quite painful, and I didn't feel confident about holding the reins properly, so we had to change our plans for the afternoon. It wasn't as much fun, but as husband Nev observed, I ended up with a pain in the hand instead of a pain in the bum. (I hadn't ridden for ages, so I was bound to finish the day feeling saddle-sore).

Typically lazy, it’s taken me almost 17 months to get around to identifying the culprit. But I have done it, and you can see the miscreant (and his better-behaved colleagues) at Quinta do Lago's Centro Hipico on my updated page about Algarve horse-riding.

Vacation Planning...

I'm just starting to put some time aside to do my in-depth research routine for our Algarve vacation, probably in September.

We're going to make it a 2-weeker again, so I think September (the latter half) is just about right for a couple of pale Northeners! There's still hardly any chance of rain, but the temperatures are more bearable for those who aren't used to taking a siesta.

Still haven't decided what kind of holiday this one will be. I put up a page on my site about some great Algarve apartments that we 'discovered' near Boliqueime. But then I have to factor in that husband Nev quite likes the idea of tennis holidays.

And the trouble is, Algarve accommodation offers the vacationer so many choices! (As you'll see if you check out that link).

On the plus side, I love an Algarve vacation so much that I don't care how much planning and research is involved.

I'll update things here when I've some progress to report.

Lazy Girl Signs In Again...

Busy, busy, busy!

It's no excuse, I know, but things always get in the way of blogging. Of course, having one's ISP go out of business and losing Internet access doesn't help. Nor does a lightning strike that takes out some of your local telephone exchange.

But I have been busy on the website, in my own defence…

When we enjoyed our April 2005 villa holiday in Boliqueime, we met a charming couple who owned a converted Algarve farmhouse that was our nearest neighbouring property. They have 7 charmingly quaint (but well-appointed) apartments in the building, lovely, extensive grounds with a small pool, wonderful views over some blissfully peaceful rural surroundings… And it's only about a 20 minute drive to the nearest beaches.

We were so impressed that we took the details, so we could book a stay sometime. If you'd like to find out more, check my new page about the Algarve apartments at Casa da Porta Azul.

And that's not all! I also recorded my trip to revisit Carvoeiro, which is a great introduction for anyone wishing to samplethe Algarve's wonderful cove beaches.

Now that the excitement's died down again, maybe I can get back into some serious blogging?

They're at it again...!

Never content to leave well enough alone, the politicians (yes, even those in the laid-back Algarve) just have to stick their oars in.

The idea of charging a toll for driving on the Via do Infante east-west motorway has reared its (ugly and unwelcome) head once more.

As I've written before, this is crazy. The great thing about Algarve vacations is that you can drive anywhere, park (just about) anywhere and enjoy yourself anywhere for free, and only spend your tourist money when you want to. Most of us like the place so much that we splash out a bit anyway...

And that freedom and lack of grasping-ness is what keeps the tourist shekels moving through the area's economy. And I do mean all of it, not just the coastal areas...

So, a success story - what can go wrong? Enter the politicians. Despite having fought a recent election campaign on the promise not to tax the Infante, there are plans afoot to 'take another look' at the idea.

Are they mad?

The Algarve area is wonderfully compact, and you can visit just about anywhere during a day's round-trip. That is greatly facilitated by the A22 motorway, which can zip you east or west to within a few miles of where you want to be. Then, you can leave it behind and chance your arm on one of the charmingly quirky minor roads.

Why, some of my favourite (recommended) Algarve circuits, like the Sotavento or Barlavento, and even the Tavira Tour would be a nightmare without using the Via do Infante.

The N125 is too built-up, and takes too much time. There are traffic lights, crossroads (some delightfully weird and verging on the dangerously confusing) and lots of other urban hazards to negotiate for drivers unfamiliar with such things. A journey can take forever!

'If it isn't broken, don't fix it' goes the saying...

Only an idiot would threaten the prosperity that the free movement of tourism brings to Algarve's economy. Trouble is, we (and they) keep electing them!

We're back!...

... and it was great!

Our week in a gorgeous Algarve villa near Boliqueime was over much too soon. I'm determined to arrange things in future so that I get to spend at least 2 weeks at a time on an Algarve vacation.

But, on the plus side - it was wonderful...

The villa was calm and restful, the weather was hot and sunny - and the Algarve was just how I like it (i.e. it contained me!)

Now I've got to knuckle down to putting out my next Algarve newsletter.

But I've already been hard at work on a couple of new pages:

Paderne: a choice of ruins...

I like castles, whatever their state of repair, so I wasn't too disappointed when the one at Paderna turned out to be past its best...

We visited this little hamlet during our Algarve hols in Albufeira, September 2004. The place itself is pleasant enough, with a choice of cafés and eateries, but I was more interested in the historical stuff.

We looked at the fonte, just outside the village, and I climbed up the observation tower (I'm nosy like that). It's a working spring, with canopied water channels and is still used by passing locals. It seems there are market stalls set up there sometimes, but nothing was happening on the hot day when we visited.

Undaunted, we pressed on to visit the castle. That was more like it... I was glad we hadn't walked along the uneven, dusty track, since it seemed much longer than the advertised 1.5 km.

Work is underway to restore the fortress to some of its former glory, and the workmen were at their tasks during our visit. Like most such fortifications in Algarve, Paderne castle changed hands during the centuries between the Moors' arrival in the Iberian Peninsula and their expulsion.

These huge stone edifices always impress me, as I simply can't imagine the effort that went into their building (or the privations suffered by those who inhabited them - the sanitation problems alone make me shudder!)

So, it was a lovely day for exploring and we walked around the remains, shared some snacks and took some digi-photos. That's about all I ask of a lazy vacation day.

As you'll see from the pic above, I snapped Nev while he was standing in front of the castle's facade. Since he was in marginally better condition than the other ruin, I took him home with me!

A sunny little place I know...

The weather outside is... awful.

I know it's the time of year and all that, but somehow that's not reassuring. Not wishing to be a whinger, but when did 'things can only get better' make anyone feel good at the time?

As I often do, I pulled out my Algarve vacation diaries and had a leaf through, in an effort to cheer myself up.

I read about our visit to a lovely little hamlet that goes by the name of Querenca (we went there for the first and only time last August) and was transported back to a beautiful hot day, a smashing cross-country drive from Alte, and an encounter with a nosey goat...

So I thought about writing it up, so I could share the great feeling I'd managed to conjure up...

...sorted out some photos and reminisced about the experience and... hey, presto! Another page for my website.

Querenca

It's a peaceful place, with some pretty wow vivendas, I thought.

Nev and I enjoyed a relaxed re-fuelling session in one of its restaurants after our stroll around.

If I had to choose a place for an Algarve holiday home, I think Querenca might well feature high up my wish list.

Oh, well. Back to dreary southern England, while I plan our next Algarve adventure.

I don't want to wish my life away, but my next vacation can't come soon enough!

It probably won't be until late April or early May (bummer), but we've decided to go for a villa again, since we enjoyed it so much when we 'went large' in 2003.

So that's lots more research to do before we go, but I've made a start -

Road Bridge Shock Horror!

If you go down to the woods today... you'll be a lot safer than driving across the Faro road bridge!

It seems that a damning report about the state of repair of this bridge has come to light recently and it makes 'interesting' reading.

The main problem with the report seems to be that it is almost 3 years old and has been buried in a bureaucratic backwater.

Now that it's been unearthed, its recommendations should be put into place as soon as possible, states the discloser of this vital information (and President of Faro Câmara), José Vitorino.

Among a number of measures reported in the Resident, the local English-language newspaper, there should be a ban on all traffic of more than 3.5 tonnes. Even those vehicles that are permitted should maintain a minimum distance of 30 metres.

This is likely to be regarded as something of an imposition by local drivers, who normally operate in the 0.3 to 3 metre range!

It will be interesting to observe how quickly and how tenaciously these conditions are enforced, since driving safety is a concept that is only inching its way into the Portuguese consciousness...

As always, my advice is to drive cautiously in the Algarve, and to keep your wits about you. (Plus, avoid crossing the Faro bridge if at all possible - you have been warned!)

... Nor Any Drop To Drink!

It's dry-as-a-bone in Algarve (and throughout Portugal), apparently.

Temperatures have been higher than the seasonal average (let's hear it for Global Warming!) and that means less water for consumption...

What does this mean? Well, if you're a holiday-maker, only there for a short time to enjoy yourself, probably not much. Even if you're in the tourist service industries, it's likely to be good news, short-term.

But, if you're in agriculture to make a living, things won't seem so rosy (or is that rosé?).

The farmers' confederation, whose acronym is, unhappily, CAP (shades of European agricultural subsidy excesses) claims that pasture land is already affected, and crops may soon follow. And, it seems, fruit trees will be thrown off-kilter too, and will flower too early.

Local environmentalists are keen to see measures put in place to conserve water use, so expect to be sharing baths and shower facilities with complete strangers this summer, if they have their way!

It is claimed that there is already a programme for efficient water usage in place, but it has not been implemented due to bureaucratic inefficiency. I, for one, refuse to believe this slur on our Algarvean civil servants!

Unfortunately, the prevalent attitude that I have encountered in Algarve is that water is, and always will be, plentiful. It will take a massive public re-education programme to change such views, and leaving it until now does smack of complacency or inefficiency (or both).

It looks like I'm not going to make it back for an Algarve break until March at the earliest, so I suppose that either I'll find that the beaches now give onto a sand-blown desert, or at least that I should have taken my own massive stocks of drinking water, and maybe even a pocket-sized reverse-osmosis machine for de-salinating sea water.

All I know is, that would require a heavy discount on my holiday tickets!

We'll see what happens. Watch this space...

Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics...

Some interesting facts about Algarve tourism were published recently, and I was struck by the strange ways that statistics are treated in some quarters.

Overall, it seems, tourist numbers were down to their lowest levels since 1993. And this was despite the hosting of Euro 2004 soccer finals in Portugal and Algarve.

And that's my first departure from the official line... I think the numbers were down because of Euro 2004, not 'despite'. I tend to watch more TV soccer (football) than I'd like because my husband enjoys it, but neither he nor I would go anywhere near a stadium before or after a match was to be held because of the perceived likelihood of bad behaviour by a small number of 'fans'.

Multiply that effect for a major championship, add in the fact that some hooligans travel with the precise aim of causing trouble at such events, factor in some exaggerated claims for accommodation uptake (places saying they were full when they weren't) - and is it any wonder that people stayed away in droves?

An interesting fact I learned was that some 58% of those using Faro airport are Brits! I knew that a lot of us love Algarve, but wow! that's impressive. Another take on that figure, however, is that about 400,000 folk passing through Faro every year are headed for western Spain, so some tourist money escapes the region as soon as it has arrived. Great for Faro airport, of course, but bad news for Algarve's economy.

Apparently, golf and theme parks were both badly-hit sectors of Algarve's tourism industry, while casinos actually registered an increase in income. Moral? Tourists seem increasingly less keen about 'active' activities, preferring instead to spend their time in smoke-filled gambling dens... And we wonder why obesity is 'on the up'!

In order to end on a positive note, I should report that Senhor Hélder Martins, Algarve's tourism supremo, is optimistic. You may remember my earlier blog about the good senhor's enthusiasm for increasing Algarve's naturist facilities. My guess is that he sees a chance to offset the dearth of clothed tourists by attracting hordes of nude holiday-makers...

That's either bare-faced cheek or naked opportunism.

World Moves Up A Gear...

So there I was, blogging about an earthquake somewhere out in the Atlantic that affected Algarve...

Than BANG; this tsunami thing happens and eclipses it completely.

Many others are blogging about the rescue efforts and the need to give generously to an aid charity, so I won't repeat all that stuff. Apparently, the BBC's recent appeal programme was so effective that all the lines to Oxfam etc. are blocked! Let's hope the techie boys (and girls) sort out that stuff ASAP.

So, is this a sudden spate of related events? Are earthquakes and tsunamis going to be on the cards more often in future?

Or was this just coincidence - a statistical blip?

There's probably some seismologist somewhere trying to tell us, but being drowned out by the media preoccupation with body counts.

As if today's 60,000+ estimates weren't bad enough.

It would be nice if tomorrow's news broadcasts were about how the aid is getting through and being distributed effectively.

It's the living we should be concerned with now. Drinkable water and some form of sanitation are top priorities.

It's hard not to think: thank God I live in a part of the world where the occasional falling tree is major news. Selfish, but difficult to avoid...

Algarve Pousadas... Luxury on a Stick!

Don't ask me why I typed that. Desperation probably... I always intended to post my blog more often, but... "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." (Well, I think it was Hell, but if not, somewhere equally undesirable).

I've been writing a page about Algarve pousadas for my website. What are they? Well, they're a form of hotel accommodation that's probably unique to Portugal. But that's a bit like saying if I invent something spurious today and call it 'Worryspin', then it's unique because there's nothing like it.

Pousadas are state-subsidised luxury hotels (40+ in number) dotted throughout Portugal. They are almost always situated in spectacular or otherwise favoured settings. Some are in buildings with special histories that have been refurbished and converted (the buildings, of course - not the histories).

There are only 2 pousadas in the Algarve (the southern coastal area of Portugal).

The Sao Bras pousada was only the second one in the whole of the country, having been built in 1942. It's on a steep hillside overlooking the south coast some 20 kilometres away. And it's a great place to make a pit-stop if you're driving through the centre of Algarve during a vacation there. Coffee and cake with that view from the terrace - just Heaven!

Out near the south-west tip of Algarve (once thought of as the edge of the world), the Sagres pousada is steeped in history. It was here that Prince Henry founded his school of navigation in the 15th century and so spurred the Portuguese discoveries of foreign lands, including Brazil. Once again, the views from the pousada are sensational, and it's only a few kilometres along the coast from the Forteleza at Cabo do Sao Vicente (currently undergoing some restoration), which is also redolent of the nation's maritime history.

(I was just looking back at that word 'discoveries' and pondering. Of course, the natives who were already there when the explorers landed might not have agreed with that term, had they even understood the language. But, that's how we Europeans regarded them - they hadn't even coined the phrase 'cultural imperialism' back then).

There's going to be a third Algarve pousada, and they've started work on renovating and restoring the palacio at Estoi. But it'll probably be ages before it's open to Joe Public - so I'll write about it then...

Anyway, I hope to add another blog before Crimblemas, but who knows? There's shopping and Lord knows what else to get done, and my planning skills seem to wane the more I require them.

Algarve Earthquake!

It's true, apparently. On Monday 13 December 2004 an earthquake affected Algarve and most of Portugal.

Fortunately, the centre of the 'quake was some 100 miles out to sea, south west of Cabo de Sao Vicente. Even so, the tremors in Faro measured 5 on the Richter scale. That's enough to make inanimate objects move! (So it might even have got husband Nev out of his armchair).

Suitably reassuring 'official' noises have been made, with a statement from Coimbra University to the effect that Portugal's regulations regarding earthquakes are world-class. That would, of course, apply only to new buildings.

So, am I put off? Well, no... These things happen, and it's not like living on the San Andreas fault, as do many Californians. The last major earthquake in Portugal was 1755, so if another was due, that was probably it on Monday.

I'm still planning to get my little white legs back in Algarve as soon as I can.

Who Needs "Local Colour" When You've Got To Go?

Although I love the Algarve and its people, there's one thing that haunts me whenever I visit...

The selection of public toilets on offer!

Now, I don't mean the condition in which they're kept. Most of them are maintained in very clean state by the formidable ladies who haunt such buildings (even the Gents') and hang about hoping for a gratuity as you leave.

Let's face it, since I live in the UK, I could hardly complain about the state of repair of Portuguese toilets. At home, public conveniences are routinely trashed by our well-educated youth (Government figures suggest that 50% of them have degrees, so a BSc in Porcelain Demolition must be a popular subject).

No, I'm referring to these strange devices with two foot-shaped marks on either side of a hole in the ground! The very sight of them fills me with dread, as I never know whether my desperation to 'go' will overcome my feeling of vertigo (and worse!) as I balance precariously over a pit.

Perhaps the European Union's Community Fund could cough up for some facilities that would propel the Algarve into the 21st Century and mid-European lavatorial standards.

Don't get me wrong, there's much about the Algarve and its charming way of life that I would defend tooth and nail. It's just that those 'lead bombardier' bogs aren't among them.

Does Culture Need to be 'Official'?

The Algarve's main city, Faro, will be the 'National Capital of Culture 2005' and preparations are already afoot to organise the various functions and events that will promote its status.

It's meant, of course, to promote increased tourism, and surrounding areas can also benefit from any spin off generated by the razmataz.

What they do is to dress it up in officialese phrases like "enhancement of cultural specificness" and "preservation of architectural patrimony..."

Why bother, I ask?

It's a given that an area such as Algarve, which relies so heavily on tourist income, would like to find ways to generate more. Why wouldn't it?

But here's a newsflash for the bureaucrats... Faro's the de facto capital of Algarve, as everybody who can read already knows. And the region's charm and uniqueness stem from its local feel and the warmth of the indigenous Algarveans.

So, why would some official title, held only for one year, together with a bunch of starched suits debating complete flannel and hot air like 'architectural patrimony' impress one single tourist?
True, it'll probably cause mass orgasms among other desk-jockeys who like to spend their time organising official events and functions, but why would that translate into increased tourist Euros?

Search me - but then I just love the place for what it is...

Why I'd Like To Live In The Algarve...

Just why WOULD I like to live in the Algarve?

Well, just looking out the window today gives me reason enough...

It's bucketing down in Bournemouth! And seems to have been doing just that for weeks.

I looked back through the digital pics we took on our late August vacation this year, and almost sobbed. Our biggest problem back then was how to get enough sun-blocker onto our ever-browner skins!

So, that's one big plus about having a holiday site - you are reminded often of nice things in pleasanter climes. And it helps your resolve to book another holiday soon.

My ISP's servers seem to have been down for the last two days, so I haven't been able to add to this blog, or to upload my latest e-zine, or add any new pages.

I hope they answer my enquiry about lack of service in less than the 4 weeks (!) it took them last time.

My page about Algarve camping is now complete and ready to upload. It's an increasingly popular way to see the Algarve, but with bargain packages like the one that took us to lovely Albufeira, I can't see me being tempted...

On the one hand, a tent or caravan... on the other, an air-con apartment with access to saltwater pools and gymnasium, only 400 metres from the beach. Now let me see....

Perhaps I'm just decadent, but the apartment seems that tad more alluring.

Of course, if we had our own Algarve property, there'd be no choices to bother me. I wonder should I add it to my Christmas list? Please, Santa...

The Blog that came In from the Cold...

I'm freezing up here in my bedroom, but too lazy to go downstairs and switch on the heating.

If I get any lazier, I might drift off into a coma...

I've been reading up on how blogs can help with links to your website, but if I'm honest, I don't understand it. I can see how, if you have a link to your blog from your website, it'll get read more often, but other than that?

Anyway, I submitted to a few blog directories earlier today. Some of them want a link back from your blog, but I was happy to oblige (no skin off my nose). So that's why those little icons have appeared in my links section.

Still haven't finished my last page to upload to Algarve Beach Life this month, so haven't been able to publish the e-zine yet.

How did I start this post off? Oh, yeah. I'm cold and lazy...

No changes there, then.

Winter Drawers On...

So, it's stopped raining and the sun is out...

I've had lunch out with my friend Nikki, who visited today (so my jaw is aching from talking and chewing food).

I might even have fixed part of the problem with my PC, so that it won't crash so often (fingers crossed) and I can use Outlook Express for the first time in about 10 days. (So I've just downloaded about 100 messages - what a backlog!)

None of which is helping me to write another page about the Algarve and my vacations there, before I publish the next edition of my e-zine.

Later on, I'm off to see a chiropractor and have some kinks taken out of my skeleton. With any luck I'll get some decent sleep tonight and might even finish off this webpage...

Bloody Weather!

It's raining again! And I was going to cycle into town for the exercise.

The weather in Bournemouth has been the pits since we got back from the Algarve last month.

And the clincher was: the fortnight we were away from home was the best summer weather Bournemouth had seen.. Bummer!

I must get my e-zine written so I can publish it within the next few days.

Work, work, work...
